UPMASA supports the UP Maroons!

It is no longer news that the UP Maroons Basketball team dueled the Ateneo Blue Eagles this past UAAP Season for the Championship.     We lost.

But it ignited a pent up school spirit that not only takes pride in our intellectual prowess but also our skill in being athletic.  The UP Spirit was at its height in brains and brawn.

Participation in sports and other physical activities can have many benefits. Participation in organized sports offers the chance for youth to enhance their physical and social skills. Sports offer students a change from the monotony of their daily life. It is also a useful means of entertainment and physical activity for them.

The UP Charter stipulates in Section 3 (f) “Provide opportunities for training and learning in leadership, responsible citizenship, and the development of democratic values, institutions and practice through academic and non-academic programs, including sports and the enhancement of nationalism and national identity”

Sports teach values like discipline, responsibility, self-confidence, sacrifice, and accountability.

Sport instills school spirit and pride.  The last UAAP Basketball Season saw the Maroons emerged from the ignominy of a cellar dweller to the limelight of a potential champion.  It ignited the movement “Atin Ito” prompting the UP Manila Chancellor to cancel classes in support of the UP Maroons as they battled the Ateneo Blue Eagles.

It is in this vein that UP Alumni whether doctors, dentists, lawyers, engineers, and economists should support the Sports program of the University of the Philippines.

This request emanates from Rene Dalisay, Chair, Nowhere to go but UP, and Coach Bo Perasol of the UP Maroons Basketball Program of the University of the Philippines.
